A Realistic Review of Fad Diets and Why They May Be Harmful to Your Health
from:The term "fad diet" is one that's been subject to great debate over the last several decades. Although some feel that the media is completely to blame for society's obsession with weight loss and body image, others point out that eating disorders and fad diets have been around as long as humans have, and that the media merely perpetuates or exacerbates the problem rather than actually causing it.
The dangerous, and most important point to be concerned about is that some fad diets cause the body to go into a state of starvation due to the severe caloric restrictions and lack of essential nutrients, which may actually cause damage to several of the body's organs, some temporary, while others will be permanent.
While all of these fad diets may indeed promote weight loss, the effect is usually only a temporary one, and most doctors agree that losing and regaining weight, also called "the yo-yo syndrome," is detrimental to one's health. For advice as to which diet may be the best, and the safest for you, consult with your own health care provider for their recommendations before embarking on any new diet program.
- The Atkins Diet: One of the very most popular fad diets, the Atkins Diet severely restricts one's food intake by eliminating most all carbohydrates for the first two weeks, and then gradually increasing certain types of carbs over time.
- The Grapefruit Diet: The Grapefruit Diet calls for eating one grapefruit before each and every meal, but does allow for as many as 800 calories a day, which is high for a diet that's considered to be of the "fad" variety.
- The Lemonade Diet: Also referred to as the Master Cleanse Diet, this diet allows no foods at all and is generally around a ridiculous 50 calories per day. Dieters are told to mix lemon juice, maple syrup, and oddly enough, cayenne pepper, to water and drink that for anywhere from 10 to 40 days to detoxify and completely cleanse their system.
- Liquid Diets: Liquid diets, as the name suggests, require that dieters only consume liquids, usually water, juices, protein shakes, teas, and coffee, instead of eating foods. Much like the other popular fad diets, this one doesn't take into account the fact that the body requires certain minerals, vitamins, carbohydrates, and proteins in order to function properly.
To quickly spot a fad diet, look for any of the four following clues:
- The diet claims to promote rapid, unrealistic amounts of weight loss.
- The diet requires the use of special products or supplements opposed to eating regular foods.
- The diet requires that certain foods be eaten at specific times during the day.
- The diet promises astounding weight loss with no exercise or dietary modifications.
Although following a fad diet may be very tempting, especially with claims of many pounds and inches lost in just a short period of time, the health ramifications that may ensue are certainly not worth the risk. For losing weight not only the healthy way, but also in a way that will keep the pounds off over the long term, following a sensible diet and getting daily exercise is the absolute best type of plan to follow.
