Save Time Cooking But Don't Sacrifice Your Health

from:

We live in the convenience age. There are so many time saving devices and prepared foods it can make your head spin. You can buy everything from pre-made waffles to bacon that is already cooked for you! You know how they say if it's sounds too good to be true it is? The pre-made foods all sounds wonderful, but are they really nourishing our bodies or just feeding our desire to get out of the kitchen fast?

What's in all those pre-made boxes and bags? A good rule of thumb is to read labels. If you can't pronounce or don't recognize the items on the labels, then your body probably won't know what to do with them either. Use only real ingredients that are found in nature and are recognized as food.

How does this save you time in the kitchen? Preparing good food doesn't have to cost you any more time in the kitchen than cooking prepared foods. I'm a weight loss coach and I tell everyone (whether you need to lose weight or not) to join the "fill your plate club". This is NOT the "clean plate club" that your mother always used to get you to eat all your dinner. When you sit down to eat you fill your plate 1/2 full with fruits and vegetables (sorry, potatoes don't count here). Then fill in with some protein and a multi-grain carbohydrate if needed. If you leave out the protein you will definitely be hungry later.

Make eating healthy easy for yourself. Always have lettuce torn up and in a bag or bowl so that it's easy to grab and add to your meal. I usually make a big salad that will last several days so I don't have to remake it every day. Have vegetables cut up and in containers in your refrigerator. We use carrots, cucumbers, and peppers.

Always have fruit sitting out on your counter or table as an easy snack that doesn't have to be heated or prepared. When you're preparing your meal and you bring out the salad and vegetables that have already been prepared days ahead, you have a good portion of your meal already prepared.

Cooking vegetables is about the easiest and fastest thing you can do. If you eat real food it will help you and your family feel better.
